Jessie DeAro

Program Officer at National Science Foundation

Dr. Jessie DeAro, Program Director, Directorate for Education and Human Resources, National Science Foundation has seventeen years of experience managing federal capacity building and education programs at the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Her expertise is focused on higher education diversity programs and policy designed to improve the participation and success of underrepresented minorities and women in STEM education programs and the workforce. She was awarded a Presidential Management Fellowship in 1999 after earning her doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She was detailed to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy in 2010 to work on policy related to STEM education and diversity. She has served as a manager in the Senior Executive Service as the acting Deputy Division Director in the Directorate for Education and Human Resources at NSF. She is currently the lead program officer for the ADVANCE program and on the management team for the EHR Core Research program (ECR). The ADVANCE program focuses on systemic change within institutions of higher education and organizations to address gender-based inequities that impact women in STEM academic careers. ECR supports education research proposals to study STEM learning and learning environments, STEM workforce, and broadening participation in STEM.
