Migrants of the Mediterranean

Migrants of the Mediterranean is a Humanitarian Storytelling organization, born in Lampedusa, Sicily in 2016 and continuing today across the EU, and beyond. Our mission is to give back dignity to the people who have had it taken from them during difficult migrations to Europe, which often include human rights abuses like slavery and torture. We meet people face to face. We document each Journey Story for the historical record, and we continue to follow our profiles in continuation of their stories as they claim asylum and adjust to life in Europe. We stay in close contact with our subjects. We believe in the dignity and power of the people whose stories we tell. And we use the stories in our archive to inform scholars, journalists, and those in public policy who can influence positive change toward a more inclusive and diverse society.

Migrants of the Mediterranean is a nonprofit organization that uses Humanitarian Storytelling, a hybrid term we've created to encompass humanitarianism, journalism and contemporary history. With it, we account for vulnerable and marginalized individuals, and preserve their stories, pictures and voices.
