Brooke Staley
Epidemiologst, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
As a public health champion, Brooke Staley is dedicated to amplifying the voices of marginalized individuals from underserved communities. Her deep commitment is driven by her previous work on the NIH-Funded Black LIFE Study and projects with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Because of her experiences, Brooke earned a Master of Public Health degree at Morehouse School of Medicine in 2016 and is now pursuing her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina (UNC) – Chapel Hill. Her research interest is broadly focused on understanding health disparities to promote health equity. More specifically, she examines the impacts of childhood adversity on health across the life course, social determinants of mental health disparities, and the impact of interactions between social and genetic factors on racial disparities in cardiometabolic diseases. Brooke is a fellowship trainee in the UNC Genetic Epidemiology T32 Program at UNC and co-author of a rural health research toolkit to help investigators design and conduct research with rural communities. She is dedicated to developing research to inform policies that can improve communities of need across the U.S.
